Introduction To Cultural Studies lecture notes (30 October 2013)

TV and Broadcasting II

This is a recount of what secret agent Ryan Lok (AKA A real university student) has learnt during the time span of his 2 hour lecture on cultural studies with his partner in crime, Deborah Tan (AKA The real real university student)

Global media in Cultural Studies
- Media has a big influence in culture.
- The return of the radio in the 2000s.
- Media + film industry = TELEVISION.

Genres specific to Television

Sitcoms- Episodic plots that could be watched over and over again.

Reality TV- Production of reality through simulations (REALITY MIGHT NOT BE REALITY AT ALL). Reality TV is TV's reality.

TV Game Shows- Began with radio game shows and then brought to a visual platform.
(PEOPLE LOVE TO WATCH STUPID PEOPLE. AMEN!)

10:39am. I am hungry.

Lecture starts slamming psychology (Joelle, you might wanna scroll pass this)
- Psychologists say very general stuff which makes people believe that they are telling the truth.
- Psychologists actually don't know you at all
- Psychologists get to go to Norway for 5 months for God knows why, most probably just to make her friends jealous by constantly posting beautiful photos and then her friends in Singapore will look out of the window and feel miserable.

Example of a psychologist manipulating reality TV: Derren Brown.

SOAP OPERAS
Term was created as the creators of Soap Operas were originally soap companies

Example: Growing Up.
- Set in the 60s and 70s Singapore. Show credits include real archive photos of post Singapore

11:36am. He has lost me. Time to tweet.

11:40am. Mission accomplished
